  17. <p>     For weeks, veteran observers of Thai politics confidently
  18. predicted that a military coup was unlikely, despite escalating
  19. tensions between the army and the elected government of Prime
  20. Minister Chatichai Choonhavan. That seemed a reasonable
  21. judgment--until the tanks began to roll. Just before noon
  22. last Saturday, the army staged an apparently bloodless coup.
  23. The military arrested the top leaders of the government,
  24. including the Prime Minister; imposed martial law; and
  25. suspended the 1978 constitution. The leader of the junta,
  26. General Sunthorn Kongsompong, 59, announced the takeover on
  27. state television and radio, proclaiming, "We are in control of
  28. everything." It was the 19th coup attempt--of which 10 have
  29. been successful--since Thailand's absolute monarchy was
  30. overthrown in 1932.

  32. <p>     The army gave familiar explanations for its action:
  33. government corruption and abuse of power. The deeper cause,
  34. though, was clear: the fast-growing economy, along with the
  35. development of democratic politics, had diminished the
  36. military's influence and prestige. Last week the army reminded
  37. everyone that it is still a force to be reckoned with.
